In One Ear: ‘Completely amazing’

Well, it was enough of a shocker to have a Rocky Mountain goat appear on Mount Hood that the sighting made it to the U.K. on Dailymail.com. They are the rarest game mammals in Oregon and are usually seen in Eastern Oregon or the Central Cascade Range, according to the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The goat was spotted by Jackson Smith and his friend while backpacking on the Yokum Ridge Trail on July 27, Smith told KOIN. “I heard some rock fall along the ridge to our north and looked up to see this Rocky Mountain goat about 30 to 50 yards away from us,” Smith recalled.

“We don’t have an established population, and are not working to reintroduce them,” Raven Reese, of the Mount Hood National Forest, said. “Any goats seen are likely dispersed or vagrants from established populations elsewhere.”

“We were both completely shocked,” Smith commented, “but stayed still and silent as the goat began its descent down the ridge towards the Sandy River below.” The experience was “completely amazing,” he added. (Photo: Jackson Smith)
