Buoy Beer to open new taproom downtown

Buoy Beer Co. will open a new taproom with Pilot House Distilling on Friday at the old Reach Break Brewing location downtown.

Jessyka Dart-Mclean, the marketing manager at Buoy Beer, said that since the partial collapse of the brewery and restaurant building along the waterfront two years ago, the company has looked for “places within Astoria that really work with the ethos and the culture of Buoy Beer, you know, sharing a space of drinking a beer with friends after a long day of work.

“We’ve always loved drinking beer on that patio,” she said of the former Reach Break space off Duane Street. “So it seems like … a little bit of a no-brainer.”

The new taproom will be separate from Buoy Beer’s restaurant location at the Astoria Food Hub on Marine Drive, which the company opened after the collapse.

“We won’t be making any food in this location. There’s four terrific food trucks and a patio, so just working with them to create a space for everybody to hang out,” Dart-Mclean said.

Buoy Beer plans to open the taproom at noon on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. They will open at 11 a.m. this Saturday for the Astoria Regatta’s Grand Land Parade.

The taproom also has some events planned, including a monthlong Oktoberfest to engage the community. Starting in September, they will have a stein-holding contest each Saturday with a championship on Oct. 5.

They plan to remain open weekends through the rest of summer then take some time during the fall and winter to “Buoyfy” the taproom, according to Dart-Mclean. They plan to have a more set schedule after the changes.

“It’s a nice little community here in the fermentation district that we’re excited to be a part of,” Dart-Mclean said.

Reach Break Brewing closed earlier this year, citing challenges in the craft beverage industry.
