The long journey was worth it for Scottsdale’s Randy Tucker.

Tucker and his mother drove nearly 22 hours from Arizona to Astoria Golf & Country Club so he could play in the Oregon Coast Invitational. The sixth-seeded Tucker, from Talking Stick Golf Course, survived the brutal Grand Master Championships Flight, a 36-hole showdown with top-seeded Harrison Moir, of Waverley Country Club, on Saturday to raise the trophy.

Tucker won 2&1 after draining a par putt from about 8 feet on the 35th hole to survive the late push by Moir.

“The feeling is unbelievable,” Tucker said. “My mother has been here with me the entire week. It’s been so special. She comes out from North Carolina and we came out here with some friends from Arizona, it’s just unbelievable, such a special tournament, such a special week and just an amazing feeling right now.”

The Oregon Coast Invitational, one of the largest golf tournaments in Oregon, played host to golfers from all over the West Coast.

On the women’s side, the Championship Flight featured a 36 hole match between top-seeded Cappy Mack, of Rock Creek Country Club, and second-seeded Gretchen Johnson, of Waverley.

Johnson was the one holding the trophy at the end of Saturday as she put on an absolute clinic defeating Mack by a score of 9&8.

It was a stellar week for members of Astoria Golf & Country Club.

Andrew Thompson won the 3rd Flight of the Championship’s bracket as the 13th seed by defeating 10th-seed Travis Payne, of Juniper Hills Country Club. Ryan Person joined Thompson in the winners’ circle with a victory in the 5th Flight of the Championship bracket, while Gregg Carano won the 3rd Flight of the Junior Senior division. Jeff Leinassar won the Legends’ Championship Flight with a victory over Lawrence Wobbrock, of Oswego Lake Country Club. Leinassar was joined in the victory circle by Ray Grubbs, who was the victor in the 2nd Flight of the Legends bracket. Finally, the Seniors Flight saw three winners for Astoria Country Club with James Folk, Bret Stevens and Jesse French.

On the women’s side, Pat Fuller won the 5th Flight of the Women’s Senior bracket. In the Women’s Championship 1st Flight, Joey Ringwald and Katie Sturgell battled down to the wire in an all Astoria matchup that saw Sturgell prevail by a score of 1 Up.
