Astoria City Councilor Tom Brownson took a moment at a City Council meeting Monday night to honor Juanita Price, who died Monday at 102.
Price was a photographer for the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve during World War II and worked as a journalist and librarian. An advocate for civic engagement, she was recognized with the George Award, Astoria’s citizen-of-the-year honor, for 2011.
The city dubbed Aug. 21, 2023, “Juanita Price Day” to mark her 102nd birthday.
“She has been a hallmark of this community, a longtime veteran, a really important, important person, very active in all respects … She lived a really long and great life,” said Brownson, who presided over the meeting in the absence of Mayor Sean Fitzpatrick.
