Hampton Lumber has announced a $250,000 contribution to Columbia Memorial Hospital’s expansion.

The project involves construction of a new facility and the remodel of the existing building off Exchange Street in Astoria. The expansion will focus on upgrading patient spaces and creating a resilient campus that can withstand extreme weather and natural disasters.

The hospital is moving quickly toward an anticipated groundbreaking at the end of the year, with some utility work beginning as early as June.

To help finance the project, which is expected to cost upward of $250 million, the hospital foundation has led a capital campaign with a fundraising goal of $10 million. Major donations so far have come from community leaders such as Shawn and Paula Teevin, Linda Moreland, Constance Waisanen and Jody Stahancyk and John Crawford.

Hampton Lumber is the latest contributor to the project. The Portland-based company operates sawmills throughout the Northwest, including one in Warrenton. As a major employer in the region — providing jobs for roughly 160 people in Clatsop County — company leadership emphasized the importance of supporting local access to health care.

“Improved access to medical care is critically important to our employees, their families and our neighbors,” Lois Perdue, plant manager at Hampton’s Warrenton mill, said in a statement. “Getting major construction projects like this over the finish line takes an entire community and I’m thrilled we’re able to support this important effort.”

Hampton Lumber also plans to contribute wood materials for construction and outdoor landscaping.

“We’re so grateful for Hampton Lumber’s generous donations of cash and wood products for the BuildCMH Expansion Project,” Mark Kujala, executive director of the hospital foundation, said in a statement. “The support of our community and their help to build this amazing expanded hospital is what makes this project so special.”
