- The Warrenton and Sheridan softball teams shake hands after their game Tuesday.
Another game, another win for Warrenton High School softball.
The Warrenton Warriors’ 14-0 victory on Tuesday over Sheridan High School was their fourth consecutive to start the season.
It took Warrenton a couple of innings to get going against the Sheridan Spartans. Going into the third inning, the game was only 1-0. Warrenton scored eight runs in the third and five runs in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
Gracelyn Brown, making her first start of the season, was a strike-throwing machine. Brown had four shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out five.
At the plate, it was a busy day for the Warriors. KiKi Olson and Emma Smith led the way with three RBIs apiece. Lucy Smith knocked in two runs, while Sara Kornder and London O’Brien walked two times each. Emma Smith was the offensive star on Tuesday, as she reached base in all three of her plate appearances. Emma Smith had two hits and was hit by a pitch while she was at bat.
The Warriors also had a solid game in the field, making just one error in the five innings of play. This was all the more impressive, considering Warrenton was playing without starting catcher Natalie Pike.
Seaside softball defeated by Crook County
Tuesday was a rough afternoon for Seaside High School softball, as the girls fell 11-2 to Crook County.
The Crook County Cowgirls flexed their muscles with a five-run fifth inning putting the game out of reach. Seaside got on the board first, but it was all Cowgirls from then on.
Crook County’s pitching held the Seaside Seagulls to just one run the rest of the way en route to an impressive victory. Seaside finished the game with just two hits and six total base runners. Carly Corder and Ella Brenden had the only hits for Seaside, with Corder having the lone RBI.
Knappa girls see split on Tuesday
Knappa High School girls softball continued their torrid offensive pace with an 18-11 victory over Heppner/Ione/Condon in the first of two games the teams played on Tuesday.
Knappa fell behind 8-5 after four innings, only to explode with 13 runs in the last three to take the victory. The Knappa Loggers accumulated 21 hits in their win, the second time this season they’ve done so.
Mylie Lempea, Lily Simpson, Ayla Burnett and Jocelyn Tarabochia were the RBI leaders for Knappa, combining for 13 of the 18.
Lempea went 2-6, including an inside the park home run as the leadoff hitter. Burnett was 2-5 with three RBIs and Tarabochia was 3-5 with three RBIs.
Other Loggers in the stat book included Aubrey Rusinovich, Taylor Pass, Kate Maher and Kiya Roe. Rusinovich went 2-4 with one RBI and a stolen base, and Pass went 3-4. Roe went 3-5 with one RBI.
The second game had a much lower score, as the Loggers had just six hits and five runs. Knappa also had five errors, which helped aid Heppner/Ione/Condon’s rally.
The Heppner/Ione/Condon Mustangs’ three runs in the third and five runs in the fifth were more than enough to split the doubleheader. The Mustangs were victorious 9-5.
Lempea, Saphira Pietila and Pass were the only Loggers to get in the hit column during the second game.
Warrenton baseball enters the win column
It took the Warrenton Warriors baseball team a little longer to get in the win column this season. A 4-3 victory against South Umpqua High School in Roseburg snapped the Warriors’ two-game losing streak on Tuesday.
The team faces defending 3A division state champion Banks High School on Tuesday to start league play.
