Bornstein Seafoods will consolidate seafood processing operations, closing plants in Newport and Bellingham, Washington, and moving production to its location on Pier 2 in Astoria.

The Bellingham-based seafood processor leases its facility from the Port of Astoria. Will Isom, the Port’s executive director, confirmed the consolidation but declined to speak further about the move. “It’s really an internal decision,” Isom said.

According to filings under the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, Bornstein Seafoods will close the Newport location on May 21 and lay off 50 employees. The company will close the Bellingham location and lay off 72 employees on June 19.

Leadership from Bornstein Seafoods could not be reached for comment by The Astorian.

Colin Bornstein, the company’s CEO, told IntraFish, which covers the seafood industry, that the consolidation was aimed at improving operations and taking advantage of excess capacity at its location in Astoria.

Andrew Bornstein, the company’s vice president, said in a news release to the Bellingham Herald: “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the communities of Bellingham and Newport for their support over the years and remain committed to honoring our legacy while forging ahead towards a future of continued success and positive impact.”

Bornstein Seafoods and Da Yang Seafood have seafood processing operations on Pier 2 in Astoria. The Port has made infrastructure improvements to the pier a priority, securing over $27 million in federal and state funding for its rehabilitation.
