In One Ear: Creating a character

The Mirror revealed an interesting “The Goonies” tidbit recently. Actor Robert Davi, who is also an acclaimed singer, had some fun improvising on the set of the iconic kids’ adventure movie with his character, Jake Fratelli — he made Jake an opera-singing bad guy.
“The scene was written where Jake feeds Sloth (John Matuszak) in the basement by putting the food down, and then just moving it away from him as he goes to reach for it, which was very banal; it was nothing,” Davi recalled. “And I thought, well, what if Jake loves to sing, and the only one that can listen to him sing is Sloth, because he’s chained, and in the basement, and he has to listen, and if he listens good, he gets his food. So it’s a double thing.
“But of course, Sloth didn’t listen, and that’s when I can now show that other side to Jake. You listen to the line, ‘You’re just like mom and Francis. You never listen.’”
He also sang “Madame Butterfly” when Chunk (Jeff Cohen) flags him down.
“You create a character that you can, and people don’t know,” Davi added. “They see it, and they like it, and they respond to it in some way. But if they really analyze it, they go, ‘Oh God, look at that.’” (Photo: davisingssinatra.com)
