Good night for Warrenton Warriors

The Warrenton Warriors basketball teams continued their impressive play with wins Tuesday night against Yamhill-Carlton.

Tuesday started with the Warrenton boys facing off with a scrappy Yamhill-Carlton squad. The game was a physical defensive battle, as both teams went on runs only to see the opponent answer. The Yamhill-Carlton Tigers went into halftime with a 20-17 lead, which the Warriors quickly turned around in the third quarter. Once the Warriors got the lead, they never relinquished it.

Warriors junior guard Odin Wilson was the leading scorer on the night with 11 points. Wilson made the play of the game, a high-lofted shot over the hands of three Tigers defenders while the shot clock wound down. The swish of the ball through the net was the dagger in the heart of Yamhill-Carlton, as it put the Warriors up five points. Warrenton ended up winning by eight points, 46-38. Wilson was joined in double figures by junior Barett Blodgett, who had 10. Senior Kaleb Earl contributed nine points.

On the girls side, it was a dominant performance from start to finish. The girls have found their rhythm on both ends of the floor, which is leading to victories.

Sophomore Lucy Smith was a force on the interior: blocking shots, rebounding and scoring easy layups. Jamie Annat was the key defensive player at the top of the Warriors zone. Annat spent Tuesday night in the passing lanes, deflecting passes and getting steals, which fueled the Warriors’ offense.

The Warriors’ combination of size and athleticism gave the Tigers problems as Warrenton cruised to a 45-25 victory. The Warriors look to be establishing themselves as a top-three team in the Coastal Range League, along with Corbett and Banks.

Astoria boys get back on track

After a loss Friday night to hot-shooting Scappoose High School, the Astoria boys basketball team bounced back with a 68-60 victory against Tillamook.

This win evened up Astoria’s league record to 1-1. The Fishermen are back home on Saturday evening as they host Banks High School in a nonleague contest. Astoria prepares themselves for rival Seaside and two-time defending 4A state champion Cascade High School next week.

Astoria girls crush the Cheesemakers

With the goal of making another run at the state championships, wins like Tuesday will go a long way toward accomplishing it. Astoria crushed the Tillamook Cheesemakers 67-28, extending their winning streak to seven games.

With the Cowapa League not offering Astoria much resistance, their goal moving forward is to better position themselves for the state tournament. The girls have a couple of opportunities for statement wins coming up. Defending 3A state champion Banks High School comes to town for a nonleague Saturday afternoon clash.

Next week, the Fishermen have back-to-back games against Clatsop County rival Seaside High School and Cascade.

Loggers split the trip

Knappa High School’s trip to Portland saw mixed results.

The girls continued their winning ways, with a 48-13 thrashing of Mannahouse Academy.

On the boys side, it was a rough one for the Loggers, as they fell 54-23 to Mannahouse Academy.
