In One Ear: Wily otter

Last summer, there was a story in this column about an otter off Santa Cruz, California, who was terrorizing surfers by harassing them, chasing them and stealing their boards. It was very unusual otter behavior.

The culprit turned out to be a female, Otter 841, and her biggest fan might just be Mark Woodward, aka NativeSantaCruz on Facebook, who has been photographing her for months. There was a plan in place by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to relocate her, but she was too wily for her would-be captors and eluded them every time.

Now, it appears there’s an explanation for her bizarrely aggressive behavior, according to a story in Lookout Santa Cruz. She was pregnant, and now can be seen basking with her pup. Woodward calls them 841+1. Thankfully, no one is bothering them and she’s no longer attacking surfers.

“In my lifetime of taking photos of wild animals throughout the county,” Woodward noted, “841 is the only one that I always know is the same animal. I’ve felt really connected to her, and seeing the pup was almost an emotional moment.” (Photo: Mark Woodward)
