Letter: Logic trail

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 16,649 households in Clatsop County as of July 2022. One of those is headed by Craig Weston, a Gearhart real estate broker.

Clatsop County is comprised of 693,800 acres of land. Weston owns about 40 acres just outside of Gearhart’s city limits.

During the past three years, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates it has issued between 450 and 600 “damage tags” enabling people to shoot majestic elk in our county. Weston has secured enough tags for more than 75 elk to be killed on his property.

If one follows the logic trail, the numbers imply that a statistically impossible amount of damage caused by elk in our county has occurred on one small plot of land owned by a single individual.

The math just doesn’t add up!
