In One Ear: Tarantula Ghoul

Tarantula Ghoul, aka Suzanne Waldron (1931-1982), never made it to Hollywood like Vampira, but she did host “House of Horror” from 1957 and 1959 on Portland’s KPTV.

Just as Vampira got her television job by appearing at a Hollywood party in costume and being noticed, Waldron’s appearance as a witch in a production of “Macbeth” caught the attention of producers looking for a Vampira-like character to host their new show featuring horror movies.

While the show only lasted a few years and ended with an out-of-wedlock pregnancy scandal, Waldron returned to stage acting and did voice-overs for radio commercials. However, she has found everlasting fame by recording “King Kong” and “Graveyard Rock” with her backup band, the Gravediggers. The videos for the tunes are on YouTube.

Should you want to buy a copy of the 45 rpm record, there’s one for sale for a paltry $450 by groadybagoady on eBay. And only $4 for shipping. (Photo: The Goods/Gary Lee)
