Many folks go gaga for agates, semi-precious quartz stones often found on beaches, and wonder where to find them. An article on A-Z-Animals.com tells all about agate hunting in Oregon, with 21 recommended sites, several on the North Coast.

The No. 1 spot is Manzanita BeachArcadia Beach and Hug Point near Cannon Beach are next at No. 2, followed by Short Sand Beach in Oswald West Park. Coming in at No. 4 is along the base of the Cape Meares cliffs, and along Bayocean Road on Tillamook Bay. No. 5 is Wilson River, upstream of Tillamook.  The No. 6 spot is Short Beach at Oceanside.

No. 8 is Rockaway Beach, and No. 9 is Nehalem River Shores, which also has many types of carnelian. The rest of the agate hunting spots are further down the coast.

Low tide is the best time to go searching for agates, from winter to early spring. So get out your boots, a bucket and a map, and bring a light to shine on wet rocks so the agates will be more visible. Happy hunting!
