Boys Soccer: Seaside edges Astoria with late goal

After 76 minutes, 49 seconds of intense, physical Clatsop Clash boys soccer, Seaside scored the only goal of the night for a 1-0 win over Astoria, Thursday at CMH Field.

It was a nonleague contest, as the teams will battle two more times in league play.

In Thursday’s late night Clash, a breakaway up the middle by Seaside’s Jesus Arcadio Farfan resulted in a goal from close range, as the senior forward pushed a shot past Astoria goalkeeper Salvador Wienecke with just 3:11 left on the clock.

Up until then, it was a scoreless, defensive standoff, before Seaside’s relentless offensive pressure got past Astoria’s solid defensive back line.

Neither team had many scoring opportunities.

In the first half, a short pass in the box from Seaside’s Kaden Burch resulted in a shot for teammate Ishmael Villaseñor, but the shot was broken up by two Astoria defenders.

Late in the first half, a goal kick by Seaside keeper Alex Arden was deflected by Astoria’s Owen Williams, but the ball sailed over the cross bar.

It was Seaside’s 15th win over the Fishermen in the last 16 meetings. A 2017 game ended in a 2-2 tie. Astoria has not beaten the Gulls since 2014.
