Maritime history and wooden boat fans rejoice: “History pulled into the Westport Marina,” the Westport Maritime Museum in Westport, Washington, posted on its Facebook page. “The large classic yacht at the end of Float 6 is the motor yacht Taconite, built in 1930 for Bill Boeing and family … It’s a great example of tech, styling and the mechanics of the day.”
According to theprovince.com, the 125-foot yacht is made of South Pacific teak, and was the first North American private yacht to have a radar. Famed aviator Amelia Earhart and Robin Williams are just two of the many celebrities who visited the Boeing family on the yacht.
The last owner, Gordie Levett, who put her up for sale in 2015 for $2.5 million, hoped to sell her to a Canadian, but it was not to be. She was sold in 2018 to a foreign buyer (rumored to be French) for an undisclosed amount.
The yacht’s chef, Corinne Gregory Sharpe, posted that the vessel is at the marina for repairs and adjustments before continuing south, and would probably remain there “at least through early September.” So if you want to see this beautiful vessel, you’d better get moving.
