In One Ear: ‘Last man standing’

Maybe there’s hope for Astoria’s Big Red, aka the Net Loft, at 100 31st St., after all. It’s up for sale for $225,000. Christy Coulombe, of Saltaire Coastal Homes, is the realtor.

“The restoration project of your dreams is here!” the home’s website, 100-31st-st.saltairehomes.com, declares. “It is the last man standing in what was once a river covered in structures dedicated to the fishing trade … Continue the legacy of this space being a source of inspiration by bringing your own imagination!”

Big Red, built in 1897, has three stories, with 19,600 square feet of living area, but the building was badly damaged during the Great Coastal Gale of 2007.

Hopefully, someone with deep pockets and a love of history will buy Big Red. If you’re wondering if it can be restored, just take a look at the revival of a very similar building, Alderbrook Station. (Photo: Saltaire Coastal Homes)
