Faced with a steady decline in enrollment from students emerging from local high schools, Clatsop Community College is trying to strengthen partnerships with school districts.

A report from the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission showed a marked decrease from 2017 to 2022. In the 2017-2018 school year, for example, 111 new students entered the college from Astoria High School. In the 2021-2022 school year, that number was down to 11. For Seaside High School, the dip was 67 to 12. And for Warrenton High School, it was 48 to seven.

Clatsop Community Action has secured $570,000 in state money for warehouse renovations and equipment upgrades at the regional food bank in Warrenton.

The project was the only capital project in Clatsop County awarded funding during the legislative session that ended in late June.

Dusten Martin, the food bank’s chief operations officer, said the money was part of a one-time investment for infrastructure that the Oregon Food Bank secured for regional food banks across the state.

At Broadway Field, Seaside is taking small steps toward equality.

The school district is under a federal directive to improve softball facilities. A new field is planned, but the completion date has been pushed back.

Kandice Flaigg, who played softball at Seaside High School from 2017 to 2021, remembers feeling like her sport was an afterthought.

Players often had to work around makeshift practice conditions. The Gulls played home games on lines drawn over a football field.

“I think as women we already are put in a minority, and especially for women’s sports, you’re not seen as competing at a higher level,” Flaigg said. “And so they don’t take it as seriously.”
