In One Ear: Tiger tale

Cat lovers and magic fans alike, including the Ear, flocked to see the death-defying spectacle of the Siegfried & Roy show, featuring the two illusionists working with highly trained white tigers, at the Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. A large cat sanctuary, Siegfried and Roy’s Secret Garden at the Mirage housed many of the animals.

Roy Horn was attacked and almost killed by his white tiger, Mantacore, during a 2003 performance and, according to casino.org, that ended the long-running, highly successful show. Horn died in 2020, and Siegfried Fischbacher died in 2021 from pancreatic cancer.

The new owners of the Mirage closed the Secret Garden in 2022, and the Sarmoti Foundation, which was responsible for the animals’ welfare, began looking for new homes for the tigers, which was no easy task.

The news is that six of the tigers have been rehomed for life in Oregon at the WildCat Ridge Sanctuary in Scott Mills, about 25 miles northeast of Salem, according to kxl.com.

The tigers arrived in early July (Indira is pictured), and are already getting acclimated to their new home with about 80 other critters. And they will finally have some peace and quiet. The sanctuary isn’t open to the public. (Photo: WildCat Ridge Sanctuary)
