Astoria’s Colton McMaster competed in all three throwing events over the weekend in a USATF U20 meet in Eugene.

Track and field season did not end in the spring for some local athletes. Several were still running, jumping and throwing — and winning medals.

The most recent to score a state title was Seaside junior Kyler McCleary, who competed in the United State of America Track & Field Oregon Junior Olympics, held Saturday and Sunday at Silke Field in Springfield.

Competing in the age 17-18 bracket, McCleary cleared 1.80 meters (5 feet, 10 3/4 inches) to win the high jump. He later tied for fifth in the long jump.

Earlier, McCleary competed in a USATF high school invitational meet June 10 in Milwaukie, where he won the long jump and placed second in the high jump.

Competing against high school athletes (age 15 to 18) from all levels, McCleary soared 6.41 meters (21-0 1/2) in the long jump to top 14 other athletes. In the high jump, McCleary cleared 6-0 3/4 to finish second behind Jayden Churchwell, of Yoncalla, who won with a jump of 6-4.

Former area athletes competing at the collegiate level also finished strong this season.

Kaylee Mitchell — who ran two years for Astoria High School before transferring to Sprague — was one of three Oregon State athletes to earn first team All-America honors in the NCAA National Championships, the first time for the Beavers in a national championship meet since 1979.

At this year’s NCAA meet in Austin, Texas, Oregon State’s Grace Fetherstonhaugh (9:49.48) and Mitchell (9:49.66) placed sixth and seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, scoring a combined five points for the Beavers.

The two runners closed their outdoor careers as the first women in Oregon State history to earn All-America honors in both indoor and outdoor track in back-to-back seasons. Mitchell is the ninth Oregon State athlete ever to score at two NCAA meets. She also competed in the 2021 Olympic trials in Eugene.

In 2022, Mitchell helped Oregon State score at the NCAA outdoor championships for the first time since 1986 with a school record of 9:34.59 in the steeplechase.

She was also first place in the indoor 3,000 meters at the 2022 Pac-12 indoor invitational, in a school record 8:58.39.

On the East Coast, Astoria 2022 graduate Colton McMaster wrapped up his freshman season at Dartmouth College at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association outdoor championships, May 12 and May 13 at Northeastern University in Dedham, Massachusetts.

A freshman thrower for the Big Green, McMaster took fourth in the discus (162 feet, 11 inches), seventh in the shot put (53-11 3/4) and 14th in the hammer throw (182-5).
