In One Ear: Give me a sign

- The city hopes signs will help discourage disruptions in the Uppertown neighborhood around the Goonies house.
“Yay! The city got the sign up today!” Judith Niland wrote on June 2. Her photo of the new parking advisory sign about the Goonies house is shown.
For years now, Goonies house fan parking has been a huge bone of contention with the neighbors on the nearby section of Duane and 39th streets (both dead ends) and 38th Street, where the Goonies house is perched.
The streets are narrow, and the road up to the house is even narrower, another dead end, and really not designed for traffic … especially the hordes of people who want to drive up to take a gander at the film’s iconic home base.
As the sign advises: “Mr. Perkins wanted to develop this place into a commercial site. The Goonies saved their residential neighborhood, be a Goonie!”
“I, for one, think (the sign is) going to help a lot,” Niland added. “After many letters, emails, testimony, complaining, sometimes whining, occasional yelling. The city, thanks to the chamber of commerce’s help, got this up before the Goonie weekend.” Goonies Day was Wednesday, but the festivities started June 2.
“I think all the social media posts by the Oregon Film Museum, Astoria-Warrenton Area Chamber of Commerce, neighbors and owners is helping, too! Don’t stop! Repeat and repeat!”
“Thank you all,” Niland added. “Especially my Goonie neighbors.”
