Patricia Marie Heiner, 70, died peacefully on May 23 in her sleep at her home in Astoria.
Patricia was born in Astoria on Aug. 18, 1952, the second of four daughters of John and Louise Hendrickson. She and her sisters enjoyed growing up in the country, where they had fields and woods to explore. 4-H became an important part of her childhood. She was particularly fond of raising and caring for her cow, Taffy. She graduated from Astoria High School in 1970.

On Dec. 28, 1972, she eloped with her soon-to-be husband, George Heiner, fighting Portland rush-hour traffic to get to the courthouse in Vancouver, Washington, before it closed. They made it in time, which was the start of a marriage that lasted over 50 years until her death. She was a very loving and caring wife who will be so missed by her husband.
Skilled at office work, she started her career with Oregon State University Extension Service in Corvallis. In the early 1980s, after a move to Astoria, she continued her career with Oregon State University Clatsop County Extension, where she became a well-known and friendly face to those who came in the door seeking answers or information. She became particularly involved with the 4-H program.
One of her great joys was hosting large family gatherings. The home would be bursting with family, even more so as the years passed and the children grew. Everyone looked forward to her caramel corn, peanut clusters, cookies and gold cake. Her grandkids, Amelia and Ayden, whom she loved so dearly, always looked forward to a visit with Grandma.
Everyone who knew her appreciated her kindness and gentle nature. She loved to support family and friends by going to sports events, birthday parties and celebrations. She especially loved watching her son, Charlie, play basketball from his childhood through high school.
An avid quilter, sewer and crafter, she was a member of the Peace First Lutheran Church quilting group, which created quilts that were sent worldwide to those in need.
A hard worker, she took pride in the care of her home, both inside and outside. Vacuum cleaners and weed eaters were no strangers to her hands.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Louise; and her beloved sister, Joyce Brown.
She is survived by her husband, George; her son, Charlie, his wife, Carolyn, and their children, Amelia and Ayden; sisters, Nancy Junes (Brad) and Elaine Mart; sister-in-law, Sandi; brother-in-law, Gary; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Theresa, Craig, Mike, Tricia, Scott, Steve and Tania; and numerous cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Flowers and donations are welcome. Donations in Patricia’s honor can be made to Clatsop County 4-H.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Ocean View Cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
