Doris Jean (Girt) Thompson, 88, of Missoula, Montana, passed away on May 3 at her residence of natural causes.
She was born in Rainier on Dec. 29, 1934, to Clifford and Pearl Girt. As a young girl, she lived with her family in Rainier, and then Gearhart. She was educated in and graduated from Seaside public schools.
On June 7, 1953, she married James (Jim) Walter Thompson, and then had two children, Patricia LaVon and James Walter. She followed her husband to Southern California and Astoria while he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy.
She was employed at banks in San Diego and El Cajon, California, and as a bookkeeper for Bumble Bee Seafoods and Seafarer Restaurant in Astoria.
She served at the Lewis & Clark Christian School, was very involved at the Lewis & Clark Bible Church as head of their library and cooked for the Sunday morning breakfasts for many years.
She and Jim were called by their Lord to serve at the New Tribes Mission Bible School in Michigan, then Boot Camp in Baker and then the support center for missionaries overseas in Oviedo, Florida. She developed a form of lupus while in Florida, which required them to move back to Astoria, away from the heat and sun.
She was a loving and serving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She also took great and loving care of her friends, church and missionaries.
She loved painting, sewing, tatting, quilting and making egg Christmas tree ornaments.
She is preceded in death by her husband.
Her survivors include her daughter, LaVon Patrice, of Albany; son, James (Jim), and his wife, Carola, of Missoula; one sister, Patricia Coon, of Spokane, Washington; grandson, Leslie Thwing II, of Pocatello, Idaho; granddaughter, Nicole Poindexter, of Albany; granddaughter, Amber Smith, of Great Falls, Montana; granddaughter, Bethany Coski, of Mead, Washington; grandson, James Thompson, of Missoula; grandson, Stephen Thompson, of El Dorado, Arkansas; granddaughter, Michelle Lautzenheiser, of La Center, Washington; granddaughter, Rebecca Thompson, of Missoula; grandson, Jason-Michael Thompson, of Missoula; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Her ashes with be interred next to her husband’s at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
