Thank you for your interest in reading The Astorian. Here are a few stories that you might have missed this week:

Warrenton police have outgrown their space at City Hall.

The cramped quarters on S. Main Avenue can make work difficult. The server room, for example, also functions as the break room. The sergeant’s office doubles as the interview room. Eight officers share four cubicles. Any remaining open space soon becomes storage.

But an increase to an operations levy to help finance a renovation or a bond measure for a new building could pose problems politically.

“Now think about something that you’d have to (largely) increase, and are you creating an issue in your community when you put forth such a massive economic burden?” Police Chief Mathew Workman said of a bond. “I’m optimistic. I don’t know how realistic it is.”

A referendum on the May ballot could help settle a Clatsop County dispute over vacation rentals.

Competing interests have organized in the hopes of influencing the election.

North Coast Neighbors United, driven mainly by residents in Cove Beach, want to undue a county ordinance that recognized vacation rentals as an outright use in 16 zones across unincorporated areas of the county.

Everyone For The North Oregon Coast, which is made up of people in the vacation rental industry, opposes the move.

A gangway at Youngs Bay that is critical to Clatsop County’s fisheries program suffered storm damage in late December.

The spot, on city property outside the Astoria Recreation Center, is one of three locations where the county’s fisheries program uses net pens. The program, a collaboration between the county, the fishing industry and the state, helps develop high-quality salmon that does not interfere with wild salmon runs and can be harvested without impacting endangered native stocks.

The city is unsure of a timeline for a fix or what it will cost.
