Consejo Hispano, an Astoria nonprofit that serves the region’s Hispanic population, has a new program to help people prepare income tax returns.

Jenny Pool Radway, the organization’s executive director, said Consejo Hispano has been certified by the Internal Revenue Service as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance provider, an initiative designed to support free tax preparation to people in underserved communities that earn low-to-moderate income.

The IRS manages the program, and Consejo Hispano will operate and staff the site with volunteers trained and certified through the IRS.

Pool Radway said she is seeking volunteers.

People who are interested can contact Adriana Guerrero at adriana@consejohispano.org or 503-325-4547 by Monday. The program is expected to open on Feb. 15.
