Robert Adams, a landscape photographer who lives in Astoria, is featured in a retrospective exhibit on display at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
“American Silence: The Photographs of Robert Adams,” features 175 grayscale prints spanning eight rooms. The survey also includes a book.
“You have to begin by telling the truth, and it may be very bad, but you still have to do it. Then you have to go to work trying to find something redemptive,” Adams said. “The shape of the hills, the shape of the bend of the river, those are saying something somehow, if you look at them long enough.”

The coronavirus pandemic has taken a toll on student performance.
In the first statewide testing after pandemic disruptions, proficiency scores on core subjects took a dip at most school districts in Clatsop County and across Oregon.
The Smarter Balanced assessment — taken by third-through-eighth graders and 11th graders — focused on English language arts, math and science.
Craig Hoppes, the superintendent of the Astoria School District, said the figures were not surprising.
“We’ve known that we have kids that we need to catch up, and we’re working to do that,” he said.

A new brewery could enter the Astoria food and drink scene.
Portland-based Breakside Brewery is looking at a project at the former Astoria Co+op space off Exchange Street. The plans are for an eating and drinking establishment — not a brewery.
“We look forward to it,” Nathan Sasaki, who is involved with the project, said, “and we look forward to being a further part of the community.”
