The first league meeting between the Banks and Warrenton volleyball teams also happened to be a first-place showdown Tuesday night in Coastal Range League action.
The Braves served the Warriors their first league loss of the season, with Banks winning in four sets, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-17.
The Braves had some sharp serving throughout the match, including a long serving run by senior Tayler Vanaken in the first set, and senior teammate Katie Raines finished the match with three straight ace serves in Game 4.
In between, Warrenton overcame a 23-22 deficit in Game 2 by scoring three straight points.
Behind the hitting of junior Jamie Annat, the Warriors jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Game 3, only to see the Braves rally into a 7-7 tie, then take the lead for good on an ace serve by senior Madison Walker.
Warrenton held an 11-9 lead in Game 4, but a 9-2 run by the Braves helped Banks eventually clinch the victory.
Over the weekend, Warrenton’s junior varsity team placed second out of nine teams at a 4A tournament in Seaside.
Freshman Natalie Pike had 51 assists and 35 ace serves, and Kimber Parris finished with 25 kills.
Greyhounds top Loggers
In Class 2A volleyball, No. 3-ranked Gaston defeated Knappa in three sets, 25-17, 25-10, 25-10, Tuesday at Gaston.
The Greyhounds remain in first place in the Northwest League standings at 5-0, while the Loggers dropped their second league match in four days.
“We came out flat-footed, and things did not get much better for us as the night progressed,” said Knappa coach Jeff Kaul. “It was a bit surprising to me, as we had a really good practice (Monday) and the team was looking strong.” However, Knappa was missing Amanda Hellberg from the lineup.
