Crews have started to remove the historic Tourist No. 2 from the Columbia River near the Sixth Street viewing platform.

The Department of State Lands has estimated the recovery of the vessel could cost over $1 million.

The work, which involves crushing the ferry in place and taking the pieces to land, could be completed by early September

Cold, wet weather this spring caused disruptions for farmers on the North Coast.

No farming year is typical, but people across the board have been impacted this year.

“It was like one thing after another … ,” Teresa Retzlaff, the owner of 46 North Farm in Olney, said. “It was very depressing, very worrying. And like I said, I’ve been through some really bad springs before and I’ve seen snow, you know, like a light snow in April before. I’ve seen like frosts that are late. I mean I’ve seen elements of all of these things, but I’ve never seen them all in one year. It was crazy. It was really unexpected.”

The Astoria City Council indicated a willingness to help provide gap funding — likely through urban renewal money — for an affordable housing project at a former hotel building off of Marine Drive.

A few days later, though, the city discovered the building was not in the Astor East Urban Renewal District.

The city could expand the district’s boundaries, but that could take time.

“The district has been expanded in the past to enable specific projects like the Liberty Theatre, and if council remains supportive this just means spending a bit more time ironing out wrinkles,” Andy Davis, a board member of Copeland Commons, the group behind the project, said in a text message.
