Thank you for your interest in reading The Astorian. Here are a few stories that you might have missed this week:

Kenneth Haglund grew up surrounded by water — literally. The 10th child in a family of 14, he spent his childhood in a float house in Astoria.

With his father working as a gillnet fisherman and his uncle working on a pilot boat, Haglund naturally fell into the maritime business.

He started off as a deckhand with Knappton Towboat Co., eventually working his way up to being a captain. After completing arduous training, he became a licensed river pilot with the Columbia River Pilots in 1985.

Haglund retired after three decades as a river pilot. “We have a group of people that are just the best at what we do,” he said.

Clatsop County has a new mobile health clinic.

The county Public Health Department hopes to use the van to expand disease testing and vaccinations to remote areas on the North Coast.

“This is quite historic for Public Health in Clatsop County, and I think it’s just a huge relief for us,” Margo Lalich, the county’s interim public health director, said. “And it will be, I think, a relief for the community once they get more familiar with seeing us out on the streets.”

Stephen Donnelly, an emergency room doctor at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria, spent three weeks teaching trauma medicine and providing other help in Ukraine.

His volunteer outreach was coordinated by Austere Medical Relief Group.

“I think the scarier parts were when we were on that first base. When you hear airplanes fly over and they’re not on your side — they’re Russian airplanes — and you have to go run for cover. That’s pretty terrifying. And luckily, we only had to do that twice,” Donnelly said. “But it’s something you have to get used to over time, this feeling of like at any moment, things can happen.”
