The U.S. Coast Guard has issued its findings after an investigation into the capsizing of a Warrenton crab boat near the Tillamook Bay bar in 2021 left two local fishermen dead.
In a report released at a town hall on Wednesday night in Garibaldi that included the victims’ families, the Coast Guard said, “The investigation confirms that the sinking of the (Coastal Reign) was a preventable accident.”
The report recommends that Brandon Anderson, the master of the Coastal Reign, be referred for prosecution. The report also recommends that the Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Portland issue a civil penalty against Anderson for negligence.
Todd Chase, 51, and Zachary Zappone, 41, died after the 38-foot commercial fishing vessel capsized in February 2021.

Cannon Beach is getting closer to updating a transportation system plan, which would guide improvements over the next two decades.
While the process is similar to what other cities on the North Coast have gone through, some residents want to use the plan to try to limit the growth of tourism.
Some even want the city to cap the number of tourists that visit during peak season.
“This cap would influence all of the TSP items from parking to paths and so on,” Jan Siebert-Wahrmund said. “The entire scope of the TSP is focused on increased visitors over the next 20 years. If we do not have an ever-increasing number of visitors, the entire perspective on the TSP items shifts.”

At a commissioning ceremony last weekend in Connecticut, the U.S. Navy officially welcomed the USS Oregon.
The Virginia-class fast attack submarine is the first Navy ship named for our state since 1893.
The sponsor of the commissioning was Dana Richardson, of Corvallis, the wife of former Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson.
