Clatsop County leaders are concerned a habitat conservation plan will take a significant bite out of revenue from timber harvests in state forests.

The state Department of Forestry has drafted the plan to help meet federal goals to protect species potentially at risk from logging and other activities.

In a letter backed by the county Board of Commissioners, Sheriff Matt Phillips and District Attorney Ron Brown, the county urged the state to take into consideration the financial impact on counties.

Lucien Swerdloff is stepping away from the historic preservation program at Clatsop Community College.

The program, which has received attention across the West Coast, had helped preserve unique architectural history.

“I figured it’s just time. I’ve been here 25 years — that’s a long time,” Swerdloff said. “I’m still active, able to do stuff, and I figured I did what I could do here. The program needs to change, to grow and to develop to go on into the future.

“Maybe it’s time for somebody new to come in and carry on and take that over.”

Fishhawk Lake, a private community near Birkenfeld, is looking to turn the page after being fined by the state over thousands of fish deaths after a reservoir was drained in 2019.

A new $6 million project could better manage water levels and benefit upstream and downstream passage of coho salmon.

“To all my neighbors and friends here at Fishhawk Lake, it has been a long journey to get here but we are a resilient bunch and as diverse as the nature that surrounds us,” Jeanne Scilley, Fishhawk Lake’s board president, told attendees at a groundbreaking this month. “ … I do believe that we are all environmental stewards in our heart and we will do what it’s going to take to maintain and improve this place that we all know and love.”
