Thank you for your interest in reading The Astorian. Here are a few stories that you might have missed this week:

Beacon Clubhouse, which provides mental health support and other services, has branched into transitional employment.

The program helps connect people to jobs and provides support during the first 90 days, such as transportation, job training and clothes. After 90 days, people may be hired on permanently or use the experience to find another job.

The outreach is under the umbrella of LiFEBoat Services, which operates off Commercial Street downtown.

Clatsop County commissioners appear ready to approve a change to the county’s development code that would make vacation rentals a recognized use in unincorporated areas.

Commissioners have struggled with the issue and have twice extended a moratorium on new vacation rental permits. The latest extension expires in late August.

The board could allow vacation rentals in all commercial and residential zones, where more than 170 already operate.

As of now, vacation rentals are only recognized in Arch Cape.

A popular Astoria coffee shop is changing hands.

Brian Medford will take over from Kristy Cross at The Rusty Cup on Commercial Street.

Cross has been recognized as best barista by readers of Coast Weekend for the past several years.

“I told him that I’ll come in and help out as long as he needs,” she said. “We just want to make it the smoothest transition, where he comes in and I slowly fade out. And then come back to fill in whenever he needs it.”
