The Astoria Police Department turned to a familiar face for its new community resource officer to respond to issues involving homelessness.
Kenny Hansen, a veteran officer, was the department’s homeless liaison for the past several years.
The new position comes amid concerns from businesses and residents related to community livability.
“The biggest challenge is really helping people with their transition from such a chaotic life,” Hansen said. “There are some that transition more easily than others and others aren’t ready to transition yet.”

After seeing more demand among the homeless for drop-in services, the Astoria Warming Center is looking to expand its mission.
A consultant from Portland State University is guiding a strategic planning process for the emergency shelter in the basement of First United Methodist Church.
Last season, which ran from mid-November to mid-March, the warming center was open 88 nights and hosted about 165 people. The shelter reached its capacity of 28 more than 10 times after not reaching capacity once the previous season.

Experts believe the region’s lack of housing and child care options also play roles.
