Waterfront master plan nears adoption

The Port of Astoria and the city are close to adopting the waterfront master plan in Uniontown.

The blueprint for redevelopment could help attract public and private investment.

Under the plan, the Astoria Riverwalk Inn and the Chinook Building would be out. A new hotel, a tower, a walkway and a footbridge could be in.

The potential to lure more marine industrial uses around Pier 1 is a critical ingredient.

Through virtual ICU, patients to get more access to expertise

A virtual ICU in the works at Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria will increase patient access to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital’s infrastructure and regionalize health care services that have been stretched thin during the coronavirus pandemic.

The expanded partnership is backed by federal funding secured in March.

Tax levy would finance improvements for Knappa firefighters

In the May election, voters in Knappa will decide on a five-year tax levy that would raise more than $3.5 million for improvements at the fire district.

The money could pay for another full-time employee to work with Fire Chief Kurt Donaldson, along with better equipment.

“We’re at 640 calls or so last year, and it’s almost starting to be more than just one person can deal with as the only full-time person,” Donaldson said. “It’s probably time for us to look at bringing on somebody else.”
