‘Terrible Tilly,’ a storied North Coast landmark, goes on the market

For $6.5 million, “Terrible Tilly” could be yours.

The historic 141-year-old Tillamook Rock Lighthouse off the coast near Cannon Beach is for sale.

The owner had wanted to turn the decommissioned lighthouse into a large columbarium, but things never really took off.

The story comes from a collaboration between The Astorian and Coast Community Radio.

In a hit to the Port of Astoria, many cruise ship bookings canceled

The Port of Astoria was expecting 42 cruise ships to dock this season. But over the past few weeks, the number has dropped to 22.

The coronavirus pandemic has made it difficult for cruise lines to staff vessels and ensure virus protocols, complicating a quick rebound for the industry.

Cruise ships are an important source of revenue for the Port, oftentimes bringing in upward of $1 million a year.

The decline in visits could also impact some local businesses that see a bump from cruise ship passengers.

At the old JC Penney, Vintage Hardware hopes for a permanent home

Paul Tuter and Becky Johnson, the co-owners of Astoria Vintage Hardware, are moving their antique store into the old J.C. Penney Co. building on Commercial Street.

The popular store has moved several times over the years, but they see the former department store as a permanent home.

“Vintage Hardware is so blessed and the community has always loved us, and we’re a real community-based store. And they’ve always rallied and supported us when we’ve been in a real estate jam, when we’ve had to find new locations,” Johnson said. “It means so much.”

They hope to complete the relocation from Marine Drive and open by mid-May.
