- Clatsop County is a child care desert.
Astoria plans to close child care facility
Clatsop County’s child care desert will get a little more barren.
Astoria, faced with a critical staffing shortage and unsustainable financial losses, will close Sprouts Learning Center at the end of June.
The closure will impact 21 families.
The city opened the day care a decade ago in response to a lack of child care options.
Child care has become an even greater challenge during the coronavirus pandemic.

On the North Coast, a nudge toward sustainable tourism
Tourism leaders on the North Coast are trying to find ways to convince visitors to be more responsible.
The immediate focus is on litter and other waste left on trails and beaches. But the campaign could evolve into strategies to reduce traffic congestion and other challenges.
“It was just putting together that idea that if everybody just did a little bit to not only pick up after themselves, but pick up after the people that aren’t behaving, crowdsourcing that effort could really go a long way,” said Joshua Heineman, Seaside’s director of tourism marketing.

In Warrenton, a hint of history found near cemetery
Bob Ellsberg and a few friends have made an interesting discovery in Warrenton: a potentially historic marker for an old cemetery.
The worn wooden plank has an engraved message: “All is lost, but hope.”
In smaller print, it also reads, “lesu, lesu,” which likely is a reference to Jesus in Latin.
Ellsberg believes the wooden plank was part of the entrance to one of the county’s first cemeteries, constructed in the 1800s. It was referred to as the Clatsop County Cemetery, and later as the Pauper Cemetery.
