All good things must come to an end.
For the Missouri volleyball team, this meant being edged out 15-13 in the fifth set of a Friday night thriller, marking the end of the Tigers’ eight-match Southeastern Conference winning streak.
Unfortunately for No. 20 Missouri, the loss came against an unranked South Carolina team (16-6, 7-5 SEC) that the Tigers beat handily less than a month ago.
Missouri (20-5, 10-3 SEC) swept the Gamecocks at home on Oct. 5 in a matchup that was hardly close until the final set. But on Friday night, South Carolina came out fired up for revenge in front of a rowdy home crowd.
Despite the loss, Dariana Hollingsworth was a bright spot for the Tigers, recording 18 kills on .361 hitting and five total blocks. Kylie Deberg made an impact with 19 kills, eight digs and four aces, while Leketor Member-Meneh posted 14 kills on .367 hitting.
Missouri started strongly, establishing and maintaining control through the majority of the opening game. Down 20-13, the Gamecocks went on a run to bridge the gap to three points, but a pair of attack errors combined with kills from Hollingsworth and Munlyn allowed the Tigers to regain a comfortable lead. A 3-0 run ending with a kill from Hollingsworth earned Missouri a 25-18 first-set victory.
South Carolina opened the next set with a 3-0 run of its own, which the Tigers then mirrored to tie things up. From there, the teams battled to stay within one or two points of each other until the final moments of the game, when the Gamecocks tallied a kill to secure a 25-23 second-set win.
Set three initially saw more of the same, before three South Carolina errors and back-to-back kills by Member-Meneh and Deberg granted Missouri a 13-8 lead. The Tigers stayed solid to go up 19-12, and the Gamecocks fought to keep putting points on the board but were unable to close the gap. Missouri snagged the set 25-21 to go up 2-1 overall.
The teams traded off leads to start the fourth set, culminating in a tie at 15 apiece. But this time it was South Carolina who stepped up and posted a 4-0 run to put the Tigers in a vulnerable position late in the game. After the tie at 15, the Gamecocks outscored Missouri 10-5 to close out the fourth set 25-20 and force a fifth.
In the deciding set of a volleyball match, its no secret that the outcome depends heavily on momentum in the short race to 15 points. The teams kept it close out of the gate, but a South Carolina service error and kills from Hollingsworth and Deberg put the Tigers up 12-8. It was the last run Missouri would make.
The Gamecocks energy never seemed to falter despite the deficit, and an overturned call that went in their favor gave them the final push they needed to grab hold of the momentum. The call came at 12-10, after a kill by South Carolinas Mikayla Shields flew just out of bounds and the Tigers celebrated a three-point lead just two points from the match.
But South Carolina challenged the play, and it was overturned when a net violation was called on Missouri, bringing the score to 12-11. The cheers of Gamecock players and fans alike echoed throughout the gym, and from there, the home team never seemed to look back.
A kill from Hollingsworth put the Tigers up 13-11, but South Carolina immediately responded with a thunderous kill by Shields. An attack error by Deberg tied the set at 13, and consecutive kills from Mikayla Robinson and Shields solidified the Gamecocks upset over Missouri.
The Tigers will look to rebound at 8 p.m. Wednesday on the road against Auburn, whom Missouri beat 3-1 at home on Oct. 19. The match will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
