Angora Hiking Club scales Saddle Mountain as centennial nears

The Angora Hiking Club, founded on the summit of Saddle Mountain, will be 100 years old July 4, 2020, and the highlight of the hiking club’s centennial celebration will be a community hike to the Saddle Mountain summit that day.

To get the fun started early, everyone is invited to join the club’s annual Phyllis Dubb Memorial Flower Climb of Saddle Mountain this Saturday, June 23, led by Michael Dubb, a second-generation Angora hike leader.

In addition, club members will take part in the Warrenton Fourth of July parade.

Before vibram soles and slick gear, local folks would borrow loggers’ high top hobnail boots and use their alpenstocks to reach the summit of Clatsop County’s highest peak, Saddle Mountain. This was done without the benefit of a well-made trail.

Members plan to walk in 1920s hiking dress, and Mike Brewer, in his vintage 1920s auto, will join the walkers in the Warrenton parade and Astoria Regatta parade to take spectators back nearly 100 years.
