Get wrecked

A nugget for beer lovers: A small batch of the purported “world’s oldest beer,” called Preservation Ale, was initially brewed in 2016 from 220-year-old yeast that was salvaged from the 1797 wreck of the Sydney Cove off the south coast of Australia (tinyurl.com/oldestbeer). They also made a bit of sourdough bread.

The problem in 2016 was figuring out how to use the yeast to make larger quantities of beer. However, The Examiner reported recently that the Queen Victoria Museum Art Gallery (owners of the yeast) partnered with brewers at James Squires’ Malt Shovel Brewery to create a limited edition Porter-style beer called The Wreck — Preservation Ale, which will be available on tap next month (tinyurl.com/220sydney).
