The Astoria Lady Fishermen put a scare into the No. 7-ranked Banks Braves in a Cowapa League softball showdown Friday at CMH Field.
Astoria held a 5-4 lead after three innings, but the Braves recovered with three runs in the fourth on their way to a 9-5 win over the Fishermen.
A pair of Astoria errors on the slick infield led to three runs for the Braves in the first inning.
Banks led 4-0 going into the bottom of the third, when Astoria’s Kayla Helligso led off with a single. She scored on a pair of throwing errors by the Braves, who committed four errors in the inning.
After consecutive walks. Astoria’s Lexxis Lyngstad singled to right field to score two more runs.
And Astoria’s Julia Norris had the biggest blast of the day, belting a two-run homer to left-center field, her first career out-of-the-park home run.
But the 5-4 lead would not hold up, as Banks answered with three runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the sixth.
The Astoria bats went cold, as the Fishermen finished with six hits off Banks pitchers Michaela Shaw and Kaylin Hernandez. Norris took the loss, allowing 11 hits with seven walks.
Hannah McCourt led the Braves with three hits, four RBIs, a double and a triple.
