Andrew Benjamin Newell was born on June 5, 1990. He was raised in Astoria, Oregon, where he lived most of his life. He passed away at the age of 27.
Andrew was a Doernbecher child, and had overcome many medical challenges. He went on to prove himself, and live an ordinary, typical lifestyle. He beat many obstacles, but this time we were not so fortunate.

Andrew was also sponsored by a Shriner, and received medical attention at Shriners Hospital in Portland, Oregon.
Andrew helped in many fundraisers for the Fishermen’s Benefit Fund/Lighthouse Park project. He volunteered at many fundraisers, which benefited many fishermen’s families in times of distress.
He enjoyed helping his father with boat work, delivering the catch, and socializing with fishermen. Andrew very much enjoyed being a boat puller on any boat his father skippered. Gillnetting on Youngs Bay on the Miss Cindi was Andy’s favorite, besides going out on grandpa’s boat.
He was very well known in the fishing community, and liked by many. Always ready and willing to work as long as needed, he enjoyed lending a helping hand, and was always there to give advice.
Andrew was a member of the Special Olympics team out of St. Helens, Oregon. He participated in all of the sporting events, but especially enjoyed bocce ball, which he was very good at. He received many medals throughout his time.
Andrew loved to play bingo on Friday nights at the Moose Lodge. You don’t dare change plans, because he was meeting grandma and grandpa and Uncle Doug to win their money from them.
Andrew moved to a group home, Orchard House, in Clatskanie, Oregon, where he passed away due to health complications.
Andrew is survived by his mother, Cynthia “Cindi” Newell; a brother, Daniel Newell; a sister, Lori Kinter; grandparents, Richard and Jean Quashnick; uncles, Rick Quashnick, David (Kari) Quashnick and Doug Quashnick; aunts, Suzi (Doug) Heater, Patsy Verhouven and Sue Drake; and friend, Ricky Sutton.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Stanley “Rick” Newell, in 2007; an aunt, Donna Quashnick; and grandparents, Stanley and Betty Newell.
A celebration of life is being held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 24, at the Astoria Moose Lodge, 420 17th St.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Deep Sea Fishermen’s Benefit Fund in Warrenton, or the Astoria Moose Lodge.
They told us Andrew would be limited, but to us that meant there was no limit.
Everyone who knew Andrew would enjoy and love him. He would always leave a special place in your heart.
