Bruce Lyngstad

Scappoose

May 27, 1944 — April 18, 2017

Bruce was born in Astoria, Oregon, on May 27, 1944, to Arnold and Camilla Smith Lyngstad, and passed away on April 18, 2017, in Portland.

He grew up in Astoria, and graduated from Astoria High School in 1963. His family moved to Port Orford for a few years, and he attended Port Orford High School.

On July 29, 1972, he married Carole Gjovik.

Bruce fished for a few years before becoming a longshoreman. He retired after working many years in Astoria and Portland. He had a love of the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, and worked two winters grooming the slopes for skiers.

Bruce enjoyed cars, both old and new, and fulfilled his dream of drag racing at the Woodburn Drag Strip. The family enjoyed many vacations traveling. One special trip was made to Russia and the Scandinavian countries. The family attended a family reunion in Lyngstad, Norway, and connected with relatives still residing on the family farm.

He is survived by his spouse in Astoria; a daughter, Allison Lyngstad of Scappoose; a son, Brent Lyngstad of Columbia City; grandchildren, Caleb and William Cunningham and Tyler and Lexxis Lyngstad; sisters-in-law, Kat Gjovik and Peggy Lyle; a brother-in-law, John Gjovik; and nieces and nephews.

His parents and brother, Ross Lyngstad, preceded him in death.

Bruce enjoyed spending time in conversation with anyone. He knew no strangers. “Blessed be the ties that bind.” Memorial contributions can be made to Astoria High School Scholarships Inc.; ILWU Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 598, Astoria, OR, 97103; or a charity or organization of one’s choice.

A gathering will be held at a later time.
