The Astoria Sports Complex has won a brownfield award from the Oregon Brownfields Awards Program.

The award honors groups that have implemented innovative, practical remediation projects on brownfield sites and addressed a community development need.

The city of Astoria, Astoria School District, Columbia Memorial Hospital and Recology Western Oregon partnered to build a sports complex on a former landfill on Williamsport Road. The hospital largely financed the complex, in exchange for land on the former John Warren Field next to its main campus.

In September, the project won the Environmental Protection Agency’s Phoenix Award.
