An Astoria family has been displaced after their apartment at 10 Halsey Road caught fire Monday evening from a stove left unattended.
The family — three adults, two children and two pets — is being assisted by the Red Cross.
No one was injured in the fire.
Astoria Fire Chief Ted Ames said crews responded at about 6:30 p.m.
At the scene, firefighters saw light smoke coming from an open door of the apartment, which is on the ground floor of a two-story fourplex unit.
One of the occupants had almost controlled the fire with a portable fire extinguisher. Once the fire department responded, the crew was able to fully contain the fire.
“There was quite a bit of smoke and heat damage and fire damage in the kitchen area,” Ames said. “The family could not stay in the apartment.”
Ames estimates the damage to the apartment at about $30,000, and the damage to the contents of the apartment at about $20,000.
