May 23, 1926 — Oct. 6, 2015
Jean Dolores Kauno passed away and went to be with the Lord on Oct. 6, 2015.
Jean was born to Elmer and Faye Graves on May 23, 1926. She grew up in Tilden, Nebraska, spending most of her childhood years on the family farm, where she loved to ride her horse, Lady, and to take sleigh rides in the snow. She was fortunate to have a large extended family close by, and grew up with much love.
Jean attended high school with the late comedian Johnny Carson in Norfolk, Nebraska. She went on to attend Wayne State Teacher’s College in Wayne, Nebraska, before venturing to Denver, Colorado, to work at the Bell Telephone Co. Jean had a long career in social work and as a secretary to government agencies.
In 1946, she married Frank McMahan, who preceded her in death. They had three children, Dr. Celestine McMahan-Woneis, George McMahan, and Paul McMahan.
In 1965, Jean moved to Aberdeen, Washington, and was involved in many activities and boards, including her church and the Finnish Lodge, of which her late husband Leo Kauno was a member. Jean had the opportunity to travel extensively in many countries and lived a rich, full life. She enjoyed quilting, spending time with her family, dancing, and volunteer work.
Jean moved to Astoria, Oregon, in 2006 to be near family during retirement. She attended the First Baptist Church in Astoria, and was involved with the Warrenton Senior Center.
Jean is survived by her children, as well as her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Children of George and Janice McMahan are Sarah Coplen, Rachel McMahan, Rebekah Lilley, Roberta Rivera, Boaz McMahan and Jesse McMahan. Children of Paul and Mary McMahan are Krystal McMahan, Aubrey McMahan, Janelle McMahan, Joshua McMahan, Joseph McMahan, Jonathan McMahan, and Annora McMahan.
Great-grandchildren are Taylor Falls, Lauren Burr, Felipe DeJesus, Aubrey McMahan, Zadok Burr, Shane McMahan, Georgia McMahan, Anmaree Lilley, Alana McMahan, and Everlee Lilley, and a great-grandson is due in February.
Jean was dearly loved by all, and has left a legacy of which she can be proud. She will be greatly missed. Although we mourn, we know there is rejoicing in heaven.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 at Shively Hall in Astoria. We welcome all who knew Jean to join us in celebrating her life.
A private graveside service will be held for the family on Monday, Oct. 12.
