Harold L. Allsup 87, of Warrenton, Ore., died following a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease on Monday, Aug. 31, 2015. Hal had lived in the Veteran’s Home in The Dalles, Ore., for the past 21 months. He was a leap year baby, born on Feb. 29, 1928, to Martin and Eileene Allsup in Carter, Okla.
Hal is survived by his wife, Nancy, and their four children, Cheryl A. Allsup-Morris, Brett Simpson Allsup and his wife, Ilje, Suzanne Lynn Harris and her husband, Tom, and David Andrew Allsup, all of Oregon. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, Mark R. Allsup and his wife Leah of Oregon, Megan A. Morris of New York, Caroline A. Allsup-Ropp and her husband Tyler, Erik A. Allsup, Ian Q. Allsup, Danielle M. Allsup, Luke J. Allsup and Kaley L. Harris, a great-grandson, Owen A. Allsup, and his “adopted” granddaughter Tia Hoelsher, all of Oregon.
Hal was passionate about his country and proudly served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Hal was assigned to an aircraft carrier, the USS Boxer. He was stationed in Guam for over a year.
After the war, Hal enrolled at the University of California at Los Angeles and graduated, with honors, earning a B.S. from the School of Geology in 1955. He was a member
of Zeta Psi Fraternity, and he met his wife Nancy at a sorority/fraternity function. They were married on Jan. 21, 1956, and would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary next year. In his spare time, Hal went on to study at McGeorge School of Law and also became a California real estate broker. Hal worked for the California Department of Water Resources for 32 years before retiring and moving to the Oregon Coast. He was a senior engineering geologist for the California State Water Project.
Hal loved fishing and camping with his family, played basketball until his mid-60s, earned a brown belt in karate, built a 17-foot sailboat, and won the Folsom Lake Summer Regatta. Hal loved history, science, and was an avid reader, with an extensive library. In his retirement he took up golf and was a member of the Gearhart Golf Links Men’s Club.
A celebration of life is being planned for a later date.

Hal passed away peacefully with his family by his side.
