The Cannon Beach Farmers Market returns for its eighth straight season June 16 and will continue every Tuesday through Sept. 29. Held in the City Hall parking lot, near the intersection of Hemlock and Gower streets, the farmers market offers flowers and a wide variety of fresh produce, pasture-raised meat, organic cheeses and hand-crafted artisan food products. Music, prepared food vendors and community booths run 1 to 5 p.m.; all other vendors run from 2 to 5 p.m.
This season, the market has 25 vendors and four prepared food booths. All of the vendors from last season except for one will be returning. These include the Wine Shack, Fosse Farms Inc., Cannaan Hill Farm, Sweet Treats by George, Skamokawa Farmstead Creamery, Cannon Beach Sea Salt Co., Sea Level Bakery + Coffee and Kingfisher Farm. New product vendors are Esotico Pasta, Columbia River Smoked Salmon, Nature’s Wild Harvest, Reverend Nat’s Hard Cider and Portland Pet Food Company with organic, human-grade pet food and treats. Over in the prepared food department, O Falafel and Casa de Tamales are back and will be joined by newcomers Hello Waffle and Seaside Kombucha. Sleepy Monk will also have their cold press coffee, available at Dough Dough Boys Bakery.
The market caters to low-income shoppers; vendors will accept supplemental assistance program cards. This season, the Cannon Beach Farmers Market is introducing a children’s program, led by Jason Schermerhorn with help from his own children, Jackson and Jasmine Schermerhorn. In addition, the kids will use a Farmers Market Passport Program while at the market to track their attendance and activities.
The Hallmark Resort is partnering with the farmers market to raise funds for this program by donating a two-night stay at their resort; there will be a drawing for this prize. Anyone interested in helping to fundraise should call (503) 436-8033.
Sandi Lundy, chair of the city’s farmers market committee, said that the Cannon Beach Farmers Market has become her primary food source in the summertime.
The goal of the grower-seller farmers market is to give residents and visitors easy access to healthy, locally grown food with an eye toward reducing the carbon footprint of Pacific Northwest food consumption. It is meant to promote local farmers, fisheries, ranchers and artisans and producers of food and perishable farm products while fostering a community activity that encourages social and healthful lifestyles.
