Alfred Lee Estabrook, 95, of Astoria, died Friday, Jan. 30, 2015, in Astoria. He was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Portland, to Alfred Earnest and Alice Mae Ziegler Estabrook. He graduated from Grant High School. He served three years in the Army during World War II.

On Feb. 15, 1946, he married Mary Louise Warner in Portland. They celebrated 64 anniversaries until her passing. His career was in advertising typography as part owner of Schlegel Typesetting Company from 1947 until his first retirement in 1976. He was active as a board member and president of multiple service organizations for the mentally disabled, for typesetting groups and community groups. He also served as an elder in several churches.

He established Haystack Gardens in Cannon Beach, building the garden center, greenhouse and gardens to provide landscaping, a nursery-garden store, plant maintenance and FTD florist services to the community from 1977 to 1987. The pink flowering cherry trees, flower gardens and hanging baskets throughout Cannon Beach are his living legacy. The walkways he built around the gardens at Haystack Gardens are open to the public to this day.

Lee and Mary then retired to Terwilliger Plaza in Portland for 15 years before moving to Astoria. He lived his final years at Clatsop Retirement Village, where he hosted many family gatherings and celebrations over the years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary and daughter, Elizabeth. He is survived by daughters, Marjorie Cashion and Laura Lou Wood (Cliff), and son, Douglas Lee Estabrook; 10 grandchildren: Karen Kayekjian (Robert), Shirene Iesalnieks (John), Melinda Lane (Adam), Daniel Estabrook (Lyn), David Estabrook, Jonathan Estabrook (Elizabeth), Jeremy Estabrook (Anna), Nadine Wood, Allison Nieman (Darren) and Melanie Wood; 12 great-grandchildren: Benjamin, Anastasia, Arielle, Jordan, Karina, Emily, Sophia, Samuel Lee, Isabella, Annabelle, Elliott Lee and Russell; and two stepgrandchildren: Mara and Kirstin.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28 at Lewis and Clark Bible Church, with a luncheon to follow.
