CORVALLIS — Astoria’s Marc Gallegos and Dane Lund are both playing big roles this summer for the Corvallis Knights, who earned a berth in the West Coast League Championship Series with a thrilling 2-1 win over Bend Wednesday night.
The Knights trailed 1-0 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, before a one-out single by Gallegos and a two-run home run by Kevin Kline gave Corvallis the walk-off victory over the Elks.
Corvallis won Game 1 of the series with Bend, 2-1, Tuesday night at Bend.
The Knights (42-19) will face Bellingham at 6:40 p.m. Friday, in the opener of the best-of-3 WCLCS. Bellingham defeated Yakima Valley 4-3 at Bellingham to sweep the other semifinal.
Games 2 and 3 of the WCLCS will be played at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash., with Game 2 set for 6:35 p.m. Sunday.
In Wednesday’s win, Corvallis did not have a hit until the fourth inning, when Lund singled, but was stranded at third. Lund had two of Corvallis’s five hits.
The series with Bellingham will be the Knights’ seventh championship series appearance in the last eight years.
With eight straight division regular season titles, the Knights have become the WCL’s most successful franchise since relocating from Portland to Corvallis. They captured their first West Coast League title in their second season at Goss Stadium, and added championships in 2011 and 2013.
Last year, the Knights advanced to the WCLCS for the sixth time in seven years by sweeping Medford, and then captured their third title by avenging their 2012 WCLCS loss to Wenatchee by sweeping the Sox.
