Bend-based 10 Barrel Brewing Co.’s sour fruit beer, Swill, is being pulled from shelves throughout the Pacific Northwest.

The Bend Bulletin reports that the brewery issued a voluntary recall earlier Wednesday after receiving reports of the beer bursting from bottles and, in one case, breaking a glass bottle.

“What’s happening is we’re getting a secondary fermentation, the beer is continuing to ferment in the bottle so basically it just adds natural carbonation,” said spokesperson Garrett Wales in an interview with the Bulletin. “It’s a very small percentage of what’s out there, but for the sake of being safe and keeping our quality standards high we decided to do the recall.”

The brewery requests that anyone with Swill in their fridge get rid of any 12- or 22-ounce bottles. It’s advised to put on protective gloves and eye wear, put the bottles in a closed box and then get that box to a secured dumpster or trash can outside.
