Burst pipe washes out roadway

A waterline break near Irving Avenue and 19th Street washed part of the roadway out overnight.

Now, crews are working to repair the chunk of asphalt that broke off and slid downward, held back only by a guardrail.
Astoria Police officer Ken Hansen made the startling discovery while on patrol at 1:15 this morning.
The discovery likely saved an unsuspecting motorist or bicyclist from a serious, if not fatal accident, Police Chief Pete Curzon said.

Cindy Moore, the citys support engineer, said Irving Avenue in that area will likely be closed from now until October 2015 because of the Irving Bridge Replacement Project. That project is expected to begin in August.
However, the city may open one lane of traffic, if possible later today.
